Fallen Off the Wagon? How to Get Back On

Ever fallen off the wagon?

Were you on the wagon to begin with?

Falling off the wagon is pretty easy to do.

Today I want to help you back on it.

Any number of things can have you tumble off, like illness, injury, changes to work schedules, sick kids, moving house, the seasons changing, a general feeling of not knowing how to get back to it or start at all, anxiety around the gym and/or environment and people. The list could go on all day, there are HEAPS of things that can get in the way.

I am not here to judge these things, they just are. At any time, anything can be seen as a valid thing to get in the way of your life in general and especially the gym.

The first step in getting back to it, or starting it is to take the judgement out of it.

No need to feel guilty about letting things happen to stop you, sometimes you can’t help it, they happen.

But beating yourself up over letting something happen you have control over, or thinking lesser of yourself won’t help, and it actually doesn’t matter.

All that matters is what you choose to do right now if you have control over it.

So now step one is done, and you are at peace with the past, yes those decisions to do other things are in the past and can in this moment be changed, we go to step two.

Step two is do something, anything, that even remotely resembles the habit you once had, or want to have. Go for a walk at a specified time, set a time to stretch, write a weekly meals outline, book a session at the gym.

One tiny thing.

Then, step three is to stick to that thing. If it is a booking to do it, go do it.

If you have trouble with this step then recruit some help, we will call this step 3.1, a friend, spouse, coach at the gym, a group of friends that you know will support you. Reach out to any or all of them that you know might help you.

Humans are social animals, and as such a lot of what we are successful in life with is a team effort. Even pro tennis players have a team, coaches, physios, nutritionists, psychologists, all doing their part to help the success of the individual.

Most people I have seen fall off the wagon and stay fallen off have isolated themselves from the people and place that helped them get to where they were successful before. So if you were among a group of awesome people, get back in with them. If they are unwelcoming to you fuck them, and come see us here, we will help you.

Please don’t think I am trying to play this down and make it a small thing. Yes I am saying it is simple, but I know it certainly isn’t easy.

The human mind will conjure up all sorts of things it doesn’t know to bridge the gaps in information, thinking things like people will judge you for taking time away, that it might be embarrassing to come back and have fallen back a bit, that you are feeling like you are no longer able to do what you once did, that it won’t be the same this time around, that it might be all too unfamiliar again.

You actually don’t know any of these things until you do actually try again. Until you try they are just your imagination because none of it has happened, and to be honest it likely won’t.

Falling off the wagon is so very easy to do, starting back is simple, maybe not easy, but simple, and if you want help doing it then I want to be that one that helps. Shoot me an email and we will get you a really good plan that I will help you stick to to get you back to being the best version of you you can be right now.
