Where are you?
Where were you?
Where do you want to be?
Three questions to ask yourself.
So this time last year. Where were you? Did you want to do something in the next year to move yourself in another direction? And did you do that? Or are you sitting on the couch another year gone by and the needle hasn’t shifted in a positive direction? Are you doing an exercise program and really happy with continuing to do it to keep staying healthy and happy?
Now. Where do you want to be in a year’s time? That might be that you are currently looking after your health and wellbeing and continuing on with it. It might be that you look at the last year and think, ‘oh wow, I was going to start last summer and didn’t!’.
This time last year I was just starting to do this whole pod and blog thing. I know I used to write a fairly regular blog, but I had never really committed to it. Made it a habit.
And I was sitting and writing it last year in the old box, as we refer to it now.
A year later and a whole lot has changed. It hasn’t been because of one big thing, or a massive all or nothing effort.
It has been a little bit each day. A bit each week. Each month. Now it is a year.
I am going on a little tangent to help make my point to help you out.
This writing exercise has helped me in other areas of my life. And has helped CrossFit Armidale from there too.
Each week when I have sat down to write this I have done it when I have allocated my time to do so. This might not sound like much. But it has meant that I am blocking out that time to do it. This task must get done! So when someone tries to book me at that time the answer is that I can’t, I am already booked. So we find an alternative time.
I can’t possibly in good faith try to coach you to block your time and defend it if I was not doing the same. So this is one way it has benefited not just myself, but all the CFA members as well.
With the little habit of doing this came a bit of belief.
I have been writing about making small changes with health, fitness, sleep, nutrition, mental health etc, and as I kept writing I was seeing what was possible for myself and the box in the future. For me a small change in my workdays and work weeks has culminated in a weekly thing now that people actually tune into, and most of all a move of the box.
At the end of March we moved the box to a newer, more suited to 2026 training, location.
I really don’t think that would have happened if I hadn’t started doing something slightly different in July last year.
The mornings I was sitting in the old office writing were bleak and cold to start with. It took an effort to get up out of bed, get going, and sit down to write. But that daily effort has added up over the last 365 of them. So CrossFit Armidale is now different, a lot yes, but the same in a lot of other ways. We still provide coaching for each and every session, we make sure you are moving well and getting a good workout program in.
But we have a better facility, warmer, more inviting, more space, and so it is ‘easier’ to come in and workout. Which is exactly what we always wanted.
Now, if we take that and put it on yourself. If you decide today to start exercising, to manage how you eat in a healthier way, to commit to going to bed 10 mins earlier, or to do 10 mins of sudoku each day, that small change when done daily will likely culminate in a huge difference in a year’s time.
The thing is that just that one little change will trigger change in other areas of your life. It will result in huge improvements to all aspects of your life.
Exercise is a pretty well documented thing to improve your health and wellbeing overall, so I don’t need to tell you that if you are committed to doing something each day you will be better for it in all sorts of ways.
Eating more veggies, less overly processed stuff, more lean meats, less pre packaged stuff from the deli section, and generally cooking more meals at home from fresh ingredients is also going to have huge positive effects on your health markers.
Even just getting to bed 10 mins earlier, and getting a good night’s sleep more regularly than not will make you feel like doing other things. Work becomes easier as you are well rested and clearer in your thoughts etc. Exercise is an easier task when not sleep deprived, being able to hold conversations better. Your mind won’t just wander or time out.
The sudoku puzzles can help keep the mind active, help you in turn be clearer in your thoughts. This is a good activity to stimulate positive changes in the brain. While exercise and choosing different nutrition habits will help rewire the brain, activities like this are more inclined to be directed towards this improvement.
So I’ll ask you again, as we sit here in July: Where were you a year ago? Are you where you wanted to be?
